Cagayan’s displaced workers receive P48M in separation pay

By: Oliver T. Baccay | PIA

STA. ANA, Cagayan – Over 600 workers displaced by the closure of two business establishments at the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) in Santa Ana town have received more than P48 million in separation pay.

The affected workers, including casino dealers, were impacted by the closure of the companies in December 2024, which was ordered by CEZA. The workers received their separation pay through the efforts of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Region 2, which ensured that their rights were protected throughout the process.

“Our team worked closely with the affected workers to ensure they were fully informed about their rights and entitlements. We are committed to assisting them in every way possible to safeguard their welfare,” said DOLE Regional Director Jesus Elpidio Atal Jr.

Before the separation pay was released, DOLE conducted a labor education service session to explain how separation pay is computed, as well as how workers could access other benefits, such as unemployment insurance through the Social Security System.

Cristine Angel Malana, a 32-year-old pregnant card dealer who had worked at one of the affected establishments since 2018, shared her plans to use her separation pay to start a small business as she prepares for the birth of her child.

“I’m grateful for the separation pay. It gives me a chance to secure my future and take care of my child,” said Malana.

Nermalyn Balinan, 43, expressed her concerns about finding new employment at her age.

“I was saddened when I found out that the company was closing. My child is about to enter college, and I wasn’t sure what to do next. Thankfully, everything was resolved quickly, and we received our separation pay,” Balinan shared.

To help the displaced workers find new employment, CEZA organized a job fair as part of its 30th-anniversary celebration. The event, held in partnership with DOLE, resulted in 60 applicants being hired on the spot.

Furthermore, company owners assured CEZA that they would prioritize rehiring the displaced workers once their businesses recovered.  (OTB/PIA Region 2 with reports from DOLE)
