CEZA EFFECTIVELY ENGAGES THE COMMUNITY FOR ITS ENVIRONMENTAL PROMOTIONS EFFORTS

As part of its 30th anniversary commemoration, the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) successfully implemented its Eco Love Project, which included coastal cleanup, reef cleanup (scubasurero) and tree-planting activities.

Despite a rainy and windy weather, CEZA opened the second day of its anniversary commemoration at 7:00 AM of February 25, 2025 with a simultaneous coastal and reef cleanup drives at Port San Vicente Beach. The activities were formally opened through Mr. Jaybee Jolo Tumaneng, Land Management Officer III, who hosted the event, and Atty. Gil Aromin, Special Assistant to the A/CEO for Environmental Concerns, who welcomed the participants on behalf of Sec. Katrina Ponce Enrile, Administrator and CEO. In Atty. Aromin’s message, he reminded that a clean and healthy environment would highly be beneficial to the communities, and that activities like the coastal and reef cleanups would help keep nature clean and pleasing. He added that activities like these would also ensure a balanced development, citing as an example that reef cleanups or scubasurero would facilitate the marine species in the area to thrive and propagate profusely, thereby providing bigger and fresher catch for the local fisherfolks.

The coastal and reef cleanups were joined by no less than 150 participants from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), barangay officials and residents from San Vicente, immersion students from the Gonzaga National High School and CEZA. As a result, over 100 kilograms of waste materials, plastics, residual materials, household waste and other coastal and marine debris were collected.

Meanwhile, a simultaneous tree-planting activity was also successfully held at 6:30 AM of February 27, 2025 at Baranggays Sta. Cruz, Tangatan, Palawig and Casagan, in Sta. Ana, Cagayan. The activity was joined by 190 participants from CEZA, Philippine Marines, Philippine Navy, Philippine Coast Guard, Barangay Councils, and volunteers from the various communities, and planted 370 seedlings of Narra, Fire Tree, Golden Shower, and Butterfly Tree at the identified sites.

As it commemorates its 30th anniversary, the Eco Love Project manifests the commitment of CEZA to foster sustainable development that benefits both the environment and the people. As it has been fulfilling its mandate to opening economic opportunities and being a catalyst of growth in the Cagayan Special Economic Zone and Freeport (CSEZFP) and its neighboring towns, it has also been harnessing the bountiful and vast resources so that nature and people will thrive and flourish together.
