Farm-to-Glass Mulberry Juice: CEZA’s New Benchmark for Agri-Tourism at the Cagayan Freeport
Mulberry juice, the latest offering from Palaui Island, is a product of CEZA’s innovative initiative in collaboration with the Palaui Environmental Protectors Association (PEPA) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
The Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) is set to launch an innovative farm-to-glass mulberry juice production initiative, poised to boost the local economy, create jobs, and establish the Cagayan Special Economic Zone and Freeport (CSEZFP) as a leader in agri-tourism development.
This journey begins on the lush Palaui Island, where rows of thriving mulberry trees are cultivated by the Palaui Environmental Protectors Association (PEPA), a CEZA-supported community organization. Native to the area, these red mulberries (M. rubra) are prized for their sweet-tart flavor and health-boosting properties. CEZA identified mulberries as a unique addition to Palaui Island’s diverse eco-tourism offerings, blending sustainability and innovation.
While historically valued for nourishing silkworms, mulberries are now recognized for their versatile fruit, rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. CEZA, in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), has refined techniques to ensure top-quality production, transforming this underutilized resource into a product with global appeal.
During the mulberry harvest season, visitors to Palaui Island will be invited to experience the farm-to-glass journey firsthand. From harvesting the perfectly ripened berries to observing the juicing process at the Nature Village processing facility, tourists can indulge in the freshly processed, pure mulberry juice. This immersive activity highlights CEZA’s dedication to sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, and healthy living.
CEZA Administrator and CEO, Secretary Katrina Ponce Enrile, shared her enthusiasm for the initiative: “This product not only delights the palate with its nutritious and delicious flavor but also uplifts the local community. Whether enjoyed on its own, in cocktails, or smoothies, mulberry juice is a vibrant addition to any menu. CEZA is excited to expand this product line and explore more ways to support our local enterprises.”
