Palaui Island in the municipality of Santa Ana has been declared one of the winners of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Community-Based Tourism Award for 2019-2021.
Palaui was cited for its sustainable tourism that “safeguards its socio-economic future.”
The island was declared a protected landscape and seascape in 1994.
It is also part of the Cagayan Special Economic Zone and Freeport.
Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) Administrator Raul Lambino said Palaui has shown that sustainable tourism is possible.
“This ASEAN award makes Filipinos proud. This shows us the way forward toward sustainable tourism,” he said.
