Protecting the Future of Leatherback Sea Turtles
Leatherback sea turtle spotted nesting along the shoreline of Centro, Sta. Ana, Cagayan. This species is known to lay eggs in batches throughout the nesting season. It started to lay its eggs on May 30, 2024, and has laid in six batches since then.
A recent discovery has highlighted the shoreline of Centro, Santa Ana, Cagayan as an important nesting site for the endangered Leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). Located within the Cagayan Special Economic Zone and Freeport (CSEZFP), this site is now the focus of conservation efforts led by the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) and various partners.
Leatherback sea turtles, known for their immense size and long lifespan, are critically endangered due to habitat destruction, climate change, and human activities. The new nesting site in Santa Ana plays a vital role in the species’ survival, as female Leatherbacks return here annually to lay their eggs.
In response, CEZA has joined forces with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), local government units, and several non-governmental organizations to protect this nesting ground. Key initiatives include creating a protected area along the shoreline to minimize disturbances during the nesting season and organizing beach patrols to prevent illegal poaching of turtle eggs.
CEZA has also led community outreach efforts to educate residents about the importance of the Leatherback sea turtle and engage them in conservation activities. The DENR has provided technical expertise and resources to monitor and safeguard the nesting site, while local NGOs have raised public awareness through campaigns.
The discovery of this nesting site is a significant milestone for conservation in the Philippines and a reminder of the region’s rich biodiversity. By working together, CEZA and its partners aim to ensure that the Leatherback sea turtle can thrive in Santa Ana for generations to come.
